What is an ignition proof vacuum cleaner?
An ignition-proof vacuum cleaner is a vacuum cleaner which is so enclosed as to exclude dust and will not permit arcs, sparks or heat generated within the enclosure or otherwise released to ignite external accumulations or atmospheric suspensions of a dust which is specified in or near The vacuum cleaner. To be protected against dust ignition, a vacuum must be certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).

What is an explosion-proof vacuum cleaner?
An explosion-proof vacuum cleaner is a vacuum cleaner that can prevent the ignition of a specific gas or vapor and that operates at such an outside temperature that the surrounding combustible atmosphere does not ignite. To be considered explosion-proof, a vacuum must be certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).
What is NRTL?
OSHA created the Nationally Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL) program to ensure certain types of equipment are tested and certified for safe use in the workplace. A Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) is a private sector organization recognized by OSHA as meeting the regulatory requirements in 29 CFR 1910.7 to perform product testing and certification using consensus-based testing standards. An organization must have the necessary skills as both a product safety testing laboratory and a product certification body to receive OSHA recognition as an NRTL.
